Fly Tying

Monthly Fly Tying at the Elkhart Conservation Club The Elkhart Conservation Club has hosted a 1st Sunday of the month fly tying session for a number of years. The tying sessions are now going to be held TWICE a month. Twice as much fun and twice as much BS (Big Stories).

The schedule is as follows:

  • March 5, 2006
  • March 19, 2006
  • The tying sessions begin at 12:00 Noon and last until 4:00 p.m.

Advanced Fly Tying Courses are offered through SJRVFF. The club will bring in some of the best tyers in the US for small class demonstrations and hands on tying. Knowledge beyond basic skills are usually needed, but these classes are great to push yourself to be a better tyer.

    Fly Casting Class

Throughout the year SJRVFF teaches the basic fundamentals of fly casting. A typical class teaches the basics of fly rods, fly lines and knots used in fly fishing. Stduents are divided into small groups to work with an instructor. Students are encouraged to bring their own rod, but SJRVFF has a limited supply of rods to teach fly casting. Watch for future announcement for casting classes.

    Rod Building Class

SJRVFF added a rod building class to its schedule in 2004. Students learned the fundamentals of rod building, which includes finding the spline, attaching the handle and reel seat, wrapping the guides and applying flex coat to seal the wraps. There is a great deal of satifaction when you catch a fish on a rod that you built yourself. Typically you can save $100.00 - $200.00 compared to the price of a premium rod. SJRVFF offers students taking the class rod building kits to purchase. Watch for future announcements of rod building classes.
